Overview

On September 29, 2004 the new study "Environmental Awareness in Germany 2004" was introduced. The study was conducted by a research group at the Philipps University Marburg (lead by Prof. Dr. Udo Kuckartz). The study was developed within the framework of the the German federal government's environmental research plans and was sponsored by the German Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA).

The "Environmental Awareness in Germany" studies, commissioned by the German Federal Environmental Agency, have become tradition and are part of the permanent components of the environmental reporting. Such surveys have been conducted since the 1990s, and since 1996 they have been conducted in two-year intervals. This continuity makes the creation of a time series possible and allows trends and developments to be observed. This makes the UBA studies of environmental awareness relatively unique within social science environmental research. The original data is available to environmental researchers of scientific disciplines for secondary analysis in the Central Archive for Empirical Research in Cologne.

In March and April 2004 the oral interviews were conducted with citizens all over Germany. The sample consisted of 2018 persons. The data survey was conducted by the EMNID-Institut (Bielefeld).
